Classrooms and corridors have fallen silent at a Lichfield school as part of a drive to get people reading.
The Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) day encouraged students, teachers and support staff at Nether Stowe School to stop their normal work and get a book out.
Headteacher Ruth Poppleton explained:
“We wanted to demonstrate the great pleasure that is to be had from reading a book and show the students that this is an activity that is enjoyable by people of all ages.
“The adults have acted as great role models and DEAR has opened up many conversations between staff and students about the type of books that they enjoy.
“Students are used to reading to find answers to specific questions or for research but don’t have as many opportunities in school to read for pleasure.”
Lichfield City Council Mayor Christopher Spruce also visited the school to take part in the event.
He added:
“I was very pleased to be invited to Nether Stowe to support this worthwhile event.”
