A FORMER Burntwood student played a starring role as England Women won the Euros.
Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton – who attended Erasmus Darwin Academy – was among the heroes as the Lionesses beat Spain on penalties to lift the trophy in Switzerland.
As well as a string of saves during the game, the Chelsea stopper also denied Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmati in the shootout to ensure England retained the title.
Speaking to the BBC, Hampton said she hoped the win would propel her on to even greater things:
“There’s still a lot more to come from me. For my first major tournament, to win it is not too bad.”
Cllr Hayley Coles, cabinet member for communities and culture at Staffordshire County Council, was among those to pay tribute to Hannah and the England squad.
She said:
“It’s absolutely fantastic to see the Lionesses crowned champions once again.
“We’ve been supporting them since the tournament started and we’re so proud of Hannah and the whole squad in what was a brilliant result against a very strong Spanish team.
“We hope the victory will help inspire the next generation of players.”
