A residents’ group has welcomed plans to bring an “iconic” Lichfield building back into use.
The Angel Croft on Beacon Street has been empty for several years and has remained boarded up since.
But Friel Homes have now taken on the site and plan to convert it into five luxury buildings.
A spokesperson for the Beacon Street Area Residents’ Association (BSARA) said they were pleased to hear that the site was likely to be brought back into use.
“Friel Homes are well aware that the building is an iconic structure and as soon as the plans are passed they are keen to bring it back to life,” the spokesperson said.
“This, we are sure, will be a very positive step towards enhancing the appearance of the street in its highly visible spot opposite Lichfield Cathedral.”
Members of BSARA have already met with Friel Homes to discuss the plans for the 18th Century building and have had a tour of the site.
The spokesperson added: “We were lucky enough to be taken inside the old hotel and discovered that many of the original features are still there.
“The beautiful staircase and glass wall at the top were looking good, but unfortunately all of the windows will have to be repaired by a specialist in building restoration.”
