A road safety campaign which encourages motorists to slow down is proving popular with pupils at a school near Lichfield.
Staffordshire County Council activated flasing speed signs as part of an initiative to get drivers to reduce their speed to 20mph around schools.
The Croft Primary School in Armitage is one of 16 locations across Staffordshire that launched the project earlier this month.
Headteacher at The Croft Primary School, Joanne Millett, added:
“The Rugeley Road is very busy and having the speed indicating device placed outside our school has made drivers more aware of the speed at which they are travelling – this can only be beneficial for our pupils and their safety.”
The initial phase of the project will run until December. In January, the signs will be moved on to another 16 schools which will be announced later in the year.
Local County Councillor Frank Lewis, MBE, said:
“The 20mph zones will help to change driver behaviour which will have a big impact on the roads surrounding The Croft Primary School.
“The facts are there in black and white. Hit a child at 20mph and they have a chance of surviving – but this drops dramatically at 30mph.”
