FAMILIES leaving a Christmas Day service at Lichfield Cathedral were met by historic figures.
Re-enactors dressed as King Charles II and his mistress Nell Gwynne were on hand to give out oranges.
A spokesperson said:
“It marked a ceremony where a wreath is laid in gratitude for the rebuilding of Lichfield Cathedral after three Civil War sieges.
“When the king was restored to the throne in 1660, the cathedral had suffered great damage, including losing its spire and most of its roof.
“Local people also helped support the fund to help the cathedral and Charles provided timber for the repairs from his estates in Needwood Forest.”
