Shoppers are being urged to support independent businesses across the Lichfield.

The appeal comes after a survey by city store House of Minster showed that 60 per cent of their visitors did their Christmas shopping online.

Perceived high prices was listed as the main factor behind the decision to use the internet for gift buying.

But Jenny Briand, manager of House of Minster, said shoppers needed to look at other factors.

“It’s independent shops that provide variety on the high street,” she said. “We pride ourselves on offering a personal service, giving guidance and recommendations to our customers – which is an option that isn’t available online.

“As shopping habits change and online opportunities grow, independent retailers have to work harder to encourage people into their stores. That’s why we are encouraging local people to embrace the shopping experience, particularly in Lichfield which has a number of independent retailers, and visit smaller stores they may not have used before.

“We would urge local people to visit some of Lichfield’s local businesses when they are next planning a shopping trip. They will have the satisfaction of supporting a small retailer and may even find something unique they wouldn’t have usually bought.”
