LICHFIELD City suffered a second straight defeat after a 4-2 loss at Shifnal Town.
Matty Lovatt's men had hoped to get their first points on the board in the Northern Premier League West Division after their opening-day loss at Lower Breck.
But the visitors found themselves under pressure in the opening exchanges, with Shifnal getting themselves in front when a long through ball found Chay Tilt, who produced a lobbed finish over Carter after 17 minutes.
The lead didn't last long though, as Lichfield hit back on 22 minutes when Harry Crook's cross was turned home by Dylan Thomas.
Carter produced a good stop to prevent Shifnal retaking the lead, but he could do nothing seven minutes before half-time to prevent Jack Rowley heading home from a corner to make it 2-1.
Ethan Muckley fired just wide as City tried to find a way back into it just before the break.
Lichfield began the second half brightly with Crook being denied by a good save from home stopper Andrew Wycherley.
But Shifnal made it 3-1 ten minutes after the break when Oliver Finney finished off a corner.
Carter made a good stop to prevent things getting worse, while Lichfield failed to convert chances at the other end as they looked to get a foothold back in the game.
They were given hope a minute from time when substitute Abdul Bashiru found the net from a corner.
But as Lichfield chased an injury-time leveller, the game was killed off as Jack Hodnett made it 4-2 to Shifnal.
