Lichfield’s MP has asked the Government if it intends to ensure LGBT issues are taught in the curriculum at schools across England.
Michael Fabricant’s question came after Scotland confirmed it would become the first country in the world to include mandatory teaching of LGBT rights in state schools.
The proposals will see the history of sexual equality taught, as well as the introduction of additional steps to deal with transphobia and homophobia.
Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant spoke in a debate in the House of Commons to ask if a broader roll-out of the initiative was being planned.
He asked Minister of State for Education Nick Gibb: “The Scottish Parliament has recently decided to embed in the school curriculum LGBT issues so that LGBT children can integrate well and, more importantly, that other children treat them well.
“What thought has been given to doing the same in England?”
Mr Gibb said the focus was on inclusivity across all schools.
“We have certainly given this a great deal of thought in the context of relationships and sex education,” he said.
“We believe that all schools should ensure that young people, whatever their developing sexuality or identity, feel that relationships education and RSE is relevant to them and sensitive to their needs.
“The purpose of the new provisions includes ensuring that young people learn that there are different types of relationships in modern Britain.
“Schools should therefore ensure that RSE is inclusive and meets the needs of all young people.”
