A Lichfield teacher has travelled to Israel to take part in a Holocaust training event.
Paul Calder, head of history at the Friary School, joined 21 other teachers from across the UK for the 10 day trip to Yad Vashem.
The intensive Holocaust Educational Trust course gave the group an opportunity to enhance their understanding of the Holocaust and develop their skills to deliver classroom sessions on the subject.
“I feel privileged to have been selected to visit the world’s leading Holocaust education centre,” said Paul. “It has been extremely valuable to have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of Holocaust education, and I look forward to returning to school with fresh ideas to help Friary students understand about this challenging subject.”
During the trip, Paul heard lectures by leading experts such as Dr Efraim Zuroff from the Simon Wiesenthal Centre. Topics covered during the visit to Jerusalem included efforts to bring Nazi war criminals to justice, Jewish life before the war, the establishment of ghettos and Nazi ideological beliefs.
