The Conservative MP retained the seat he has held since its creation in 1997 by collecting 34,018 votes, up from 28,389 in the 2015 General Election.

The result came on an otherwise difficult night for the Conservatives as they failed to gain an overall majority.

But Mr Fabricant believes his relationship with the local electorate has helped him buck the trend.

“I’ve always campaigned on local issues and tried to be very approachable and not formal, pompous or distant,” he said.

“I do think that people must identify with me because we do tend to buck the national trend in the Lichfield constituency.

“I’ve said before that I think there’s a mutual love affair between myself and the Lichfield constituency.”
