MPs were reminded that they can catch a glimpse of the Staffordshire Hoard in Lichfield during the summer recess.
Christopher Pincher, MP for Shenstone, Elford and Tamworth, used his speech in the final debate before the House of Commons breaks up for the summer to remind his colleagues about the touring exhibition.
The summer adjournment debate is a traditional parliamentary occasion during which MPs use a few minutes to highlight issues and concerns in their own constituencies.
During his four-minute speech, Mr Pincher said:
“During the recess, the magnificent Staffordshire Hoard, the cache of beautiful carved gold objects that were buried for more than 1,000 years at Hammerwich on the border of the Tamworth and Lichfield constituencies, will be on show at Lichfield Cathedral between July 30 and August 21, and then at Tamworth castle between August 27 and September 18.
“I encourage you, Mr Speaker, all Members and certainly all Ministers, to pencil those dates into their diaries so that they can see the hoard for themselves, and local trades people can see the colour of their wallets.”
Speaking afterwards, Mr Pincher added:
“I am really so pleased that finally the Hoard will be on display locally so people from Lichfield district and from Tamworth can see the treasure discovered right on our doorstep.
“I hope that I have helped in small way to raise awareness of this wonderful opportunity. I hope as many people as possible go to see our own national treasure at the cathedral or castle.”
