The new chair of Lichfield District Council says he hopes a new organisation he has created will help older people across the region get online.
Cllr Colin Greatorex was appointed to the role at a meeting this week.
The Conservative representative for Stowe ward said that he would buck the trend of a chair’s charity through the creation of a new organisation which would be supported throughout the year.
“Some months ago it occurred to me that we as local authorities are forever pushing people to interact through electronic means – we are pushing people more and more to websites and being online.
“But there are some elderly people who struggle and just need that little bit of help.
“So rather than having a charity, I’ve created an unincorporated association – Easy IT – which, with a group of helpers, will offer a service to help people get connected.
“I’m fully aware we may only raise hundreds of pounds rather than thousands, but financing will be in that ball park and I will be assisting it to start the fund off.”

Many of the charity events traditionally organised by the chair of the council were previously curtailed after it emerged many were costing more to put on than they raised for good causes.
Cllr Greatorex said he had been looking at ways some fundraising activity could be reinstated.
“I’m in liaison with the Mayor of Lichfield about potential joint events.”
