Sporty students at a Lichfield school have been receiving awards from a four-time Olympian.
Bronze medal winner Jane Sixsmith MBE visited Nether Stowe School for its first ever sports awards.
Twenty three winners also got the chance to get up close and personal when Olympic torch bearer Ben Kenyon – who is also a pupil at Nether Stowe – brought along the gold torch.
Head teacher Ruth Poppleton said: “We have a great range of sporting activity at school and wanted to celebrate it in the same way we recognise academic success.
“This year, being so special for sport in Britain, seemed a great opportunity to show our pupils how proud we are of their sporting successes.”
The winners were:
- Girls Extra Curricular Commitment: Emily Marshall for her commitment and confidence in different sports and representing the school.
- Boys Extra Curricular Commitment: Thomas Lovell for his regular attendance at numerous after-school clubs, help in arranging fixtures and encouraging others.
- Girls Junior Leadership Award: Hayley Fry for helping out at local primary schools and keeping pupils motivated, engaged and enjoying sport, regardless of their abilities.
- Boys Junior Leadership Award: Ben Burkinshaw for his communication skills when helping out with local primary schools and his excellence as a role model.
- Girls Senior Leadership: Abigail Pavey for her work in helping to run a dance group for year 3 and 4 pupils at St Chad’s Primary School and for the extra work she put in to plan and choreograph routines.
- Boys Senior Leadership: Daniel Allen for his football coaching work with year 5 and 6 pupils.
- Team of The Year: Year 10 boys’ football team for becoming Cannock and Lichfield District Division One champions.
- The Nether Stowe Sporting Achievement Award: Sophie Capewell for captaining the school team for netball and rounders, coming first in the freestyle as part of the junior swimming team, coming first in the 100m and second in the 200m at the School Athletics Championships – both of which beat school records – and being selected to represent Cannock and Lichfield District at the Staffordshire Athletics Championships.
- Representative Sporting Achievement: Emily Nelson for her achievements in cycling, including selection for the British Cycling Olympic talent programme after excellent results in the National Track Championships and winning the National Madison Championships.
Nether Stowe’s Head of PE Helen Whalley added: “We want to congratulate all the students who were nominated and to thank those family members who came along to support and celebrate the sporting achievements this year.
“Our PE team has been really impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm our students continue to show in individual and team sport, as well as in supporting younger pupils to develop their skills and enjoyment.”
