Drivers will be forced to slow down outside three Lichfield schools after it was confirmed 20mph speed limits will be enforced during peak times.
St Joseph’s RC Primary School, St Michael’s Primary School and the Friary School are among the latest schools which will see limits cut as part of a Staffordshire County Council initiative.
Forty-eight sites across the county have already introduced part-time 20mph zones as part of the rolling 20 is Plenty road safety programme.
County Councillor Mike Maryon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said:
“Staffordshire is a listening council and I have heard the message loud and clear from residents – road safety is a top priority. The 20 is Plenty campaign has proved to be incredibly successful since it was launched a year ago. So far 48 schools, and thousands of children, have benefitted from this first class scheme and I am determined that many more will do so in the future.
“We have had some very positive feedback from the communities that have already had the 20mph signs. They have told us that they have noticed a difference in motorists’ behaviour and that people are taking heed of the message and putting their brakes on when driving past schools. Reducing speeds from 30mph to 20mph can literally save lives.”
The part time 20mph zones are in operation during school run times to protect pupils, but ensure that traffic flows are unaffected when children are in class and during school holidays.
