Detectives are investigating an attempted robbery at a Lichfield jewellery store.
Four men used a sledge hammer to smash the front window of Salloways jewellers in Bore Street at around 11.25am this morning (March 29).
However the gang left empty handed after a uniformed police officer who was in the area at the time and approached the raiders who drove off at speed in a silver Seat Leon car.
The Seat is believed to have travelled down the A5127 into Shenstone, where it was abandoned in St John’s Hill. The offenders, who wore dark clothes and had their faces covered, then made off in a black Audi car.
Det Sgt Peter Goodwin said:
“Despite their intentions and the damage caused, the robbers did not get inside the store. We’ve already spoken to several witnesses, but remain keen to talk to anyone who saw the offenders, or the Seat or Audi cars, before or after the crime.
