A report has backed plans to transform the site of a former shop in Lichfield into apartments.
The location previously housed the What! store on Cross Keys.
Developers hope to demolish the existing buildings and create two four-storey new ones with 34 apartments and two retail units.
Lichfield Civic Society had raised concerns over the character of the development, but Lichfield District Council’s conservation officer has not objected to the proposals.
A report to a meeting of the planning committee next week added: “Economically, the development would facilitate the re-use of an underused brownfield site, offer a development opportunity and bring additional residents and potential customers into this edge of the city centre.
“The provision of two retail units will maintain an element of commercial offer.”
