RESIDENTS have packed out a meeting after plans emerged which could see land in Hammerwich used as a site for gypsies and travellers.
The proposals would see the plot currently used as stables on Coppice Lane repurposed for “the stationing of caravans for residential purposes”.
If approved, the scheme would also see a dayroom created, along with space for a horse walker, lunge pen, manure store and outdoor riding area.
The planning application submitted to Lichfield District Council said the scheme would help tackle a shortage of local gypsy and traveller sites.
A meeting of Hammerwich Parish Council saw a large number of residents attend to raise concerns over the plans.
One local resident said:
“People were furious at yet another attempt to effectively build on precious green belt land.
“Residents turned out in force at the Hammerwich Parish Council meeting – there was so many that some had to watch on through the windows from outside.
“The planning statement referred to the proposed site, not as green belt but decided it should now be downgraded to the new grey belt status. But residents say the site is clearly part of the Hammerwich green belt.
“The site is only accessible through the notoriously narrow country lanes Hammerwich is famous for. Residents at the meeting expressed their horror at the thought of the impact associated traffic would have.”
