A tour of Lichfield Cathedral’s historic library will give visitors an opportunity to uncover hidden treasures.
A variety of rare texts are housed in the main library, situated above the Chapter House, which was built in 1249.
These include books on a wide variety of subjects from theology to travel, including:
- Justinian Codex Juris Canonici (13th century)
- Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (c1410)
- Henry VIII’s Great Bible (first edition— 1539)
- Cranmer’s Great Bible (1540)
- The Breeches or Geneva Bible (1560)
- The King James Bible (1611) – the She and Judas Bibles
- Mercator’s Atlas Novus (1638)
- Blaeu’s Theatre du Monde (1645)
- The Vinegar Bible (1717)
- Saxton’s Maps of England and Wales
The tours – on May 16 (10.30am and 1.30pm) and June 20 (11.30am and 2.30pm). – will be conducted by Canon Pete Wilcox, Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral. Only 15 people are able to go on each tour and bags cannot be taken into the library. Tours last one hour and tickets are £7.50.
