THE National Memorial Arboretum is shining the spotlight on trees as part of a summer programme of events.
The Alrewas venue is hosting Wondrous Trees from 19th July to 31st August.
The free interactive programme will explore the stories, science and sounds of the arboretum’s trees to encourage outdoor discovery.
Among the activities on offer are the sound art installation, Canopy. Developed with contributions from over 500 people, including ecologists, artists and youngsters, it offers a “thought-provoking audio journey around 24 suspended Sonic Seed pods”.
Wednesdays will also see Wondrous Takeover events where music, theatre, stories and crafts will take place, while music making workshops will be hosted on 23rd July and 20th August at 11am, 11.45am, 12.30pm, 1.15pm and 2.15pm.
Rachel Smith, head of participation and learning at the National Memorial Arboretum, said:
“Wondrous Trees will offer the chance to discover and connect with nature.
“Trees have long been powerful symbols of life, remembrance and renewal. Our summer programme has been inspired by the stories, science and sounds of the arboretum’s trees.
“The free, inclusive participatory activities will give visitors of all ages the chance to explore, reflect and learn from the stories trees tell.”
The programme events will also see a performance of Alice and the Library Tree by B’opera for children aged three to five at 11am and 1.30pm on 30th July, while interactive storytelling sessions take place on 6th and 27th August.
Older kids will be able to try hapa zome, a plant-based Japanese eco-printing technique as part of arts and crafts sessions on offer.
