Goalscoring midfielders key to Chasetown FC’s fine start to the season

The key to Chasetown FC’s strong start to the season has been their ability to score goals in all areas of the team, according to manager Charlie Blakemore.

The Scholars head into their FA Trophy clash at Sheffield FC tomorrow (October 16) aiming to convert their recent league form into a cup win.

They warmed up for that clash in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 win against Burscough that saw them climb to the lofty heights of third in the table.

Striker Gary Hay stole the headlines with a double, but goals from midfielders Danny Edwards, Ben Jevons and Dave Egan gave the scoreline the dominant feel that their performance deserved.

And manager Charlie Blakemore believes giving the goalscoring bug to his entire line-up has been crucial to their surprise start to the season. He said:

“You don’t win anything if just your strikers are scoring. You need to be scoring from elsewhere. Ben Jevons has got five now and Dave Egan keeps on popping up with important goals.”

Chasetown will go into Saturday’s clash after receiving an unexpected break in midweek after their scheduled opponents Buxton were forced to play an FA Cup replay against Telford.

But with the Scholars on a run, boss Blakemore admits that he had mixed emotions upon hearing that his side would be getting a rare Tuesday night off.

He told The Lichfield Blog:

“Is it good? Is it bad? When you’re on a run like this you want to play, but at the same time we have had a lot of games already this season. I don’t think we’ve had many Tuesdays off since the start of the season, so it won’t hurt.

“We’ve still got five or six players out injured – that’s the unbelievable bit as well. The lads that have come in have just done a fantastic job.”

Chasetown’s game at Sheffield will kick off at 3pm.
