The future of the city’s last public gym and swimming pool was saved in the short term last night.

A specially-convened meeting of Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet at the Garrick Theatre saw hundreds of residents and campaigners turn out.

The first portion of the meeting was given over to public views, before councillors debated the options of shutting all of the facility or the second option of keeping the elements of the leisure centre that have not been given over to the adjoining school open.
