A CELEBRATION has been held to mark the first anniversary of the opening of Chase Terrace Community Centre.
Previously Chase Terrace Methodist Church, the building closed as a place of worship in August 2022, but a group of former church members along with Burntwood Town Council sought to save it for community use, launching a petition which received almost 1,000 signatures.
The council went on to purchase the building in December 2023 and were awarded a grant from the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund in March 2024 to allow substantial renovations of the building to take place.
It was officially opened on 8th August 2025 by Cllr Sue Woodward.
Over the past 12 months, the centre has attracted a wide range of groups and activities, as well as supporting events held by local charities, youth groups and small businesses.
Members of Burntwood Town Council and residents who attend Coffee Mates, a group who meet at the centre, gathered this week to celebrate the milestone.
Cllr Sue Woodward, chair of Burntwood Town Council, said:
"I can hardly believe it’s a year since our community centre opened.
"It is proving to be very popular with community groups and activities, family gatherings, baby showers, birthday parties – and much more besides.
"It goes to show we were right to take the building over for the benefit of the community as the need is now well-established.
"As for Coffee Mates, we are still going strong and residents are welcome to join us on the first Tuesday of the month between 10am and 12 noon. It started as a chance for members of the former church to continue meeting up after it closed and we are delighted that others are now coming along for a cuppa and a chat."
