Burntwood Rugby Club enjoyed a weekend to remember both on and off the pitch as members celebrated its 50th birthday.

The first event was on Friday evening (18th November) when the club welcomed Wolverhampton to the CCE Sportsway for a veterans’ fixture.

The Burntwood over 35s showed that they had lost none of their rugby skills as they won 48-5 in front of a lively crowd.

The club’s under 9 side kickstarted events on the Saturday with a match against Stoke which they won. Both squads had team pictures taken alongside the Gallagher Premiership trophy, kindly loaned to the club for the day by Leicester Tigers.

During the week, Burntwood’s first team learned that they had received a home walkover due to Handsworth being unable to field a side for a re-arranged league fixture.

However, they provided a small squad of players to take part in a friendly game with the hosts boosting the numbers with a mix of first and second team players to entertain the large numbers gathered on the touchline.

In the clubhouse, after the action on the pitch, Trevor Jenkin, Staffordshire chairman of The Wooden Spoon organisation, presented a plaque to club chairman Ben Holt to confirm that the children’s charity of rugby is the designated cause for the club to fundraise for this season.

The clubhouse was packed as players and members past and current watched TV coverage of England’s comeback to draw with the All Blacks before occupying the dance floor to music provided by Plenty in the Tank.

The walkover in the league game sees Josh Canning’s side elevated to second in the table with the chance to go top when they receive Luctonians 3rds this Saturday.

The seconds make the short trip to face Rugeley 2nds as they seek to maintain their 100% winning record for the season.
