Work to restore a local canal is a project bringing far-reaching benefits to the area, the leader of Lichfield District Council has said.
Councillors will discuss plans to provide £260,000 of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding to the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust at a meeting on 22nd February.
The money – which comes from developer contributions – will allow for work to continue at the Falkland Road stretch of the Lichfield Canal.
Cllr Doug Pullen, leader of the local authority, said that while the prospect of people travelling on the waterway may still be some way off, the benefits of the project were clear to see.
“The work by the team of volunteers have far-reaching effects for the district.
“The project is about so much more than just bringing back the Lichfield Canal – it’s about helping people through volunteering or through the groups such as Duke of Edinburgh who take part in the project.
“The water may not be flowing for many years, but the restoration is helping people today.”

The Lichfield Canal work is one of two projects expected to be awarded CIL funding, with a new community centre in Streethay earmarked to receive £600,000.
