Local elections are taking place this May, with 47 seats available across Lichfield District Council’s 22 ward areas.
The Local Democracy Reporter Service has invited candidates to outline their experiences and why they are standing.
One seat has gone uncontested, meaning Brian Yeates will be the Conservative councillor for the Bourne Vale ward.
For all the other candidates, they can expect to find out whether or not they’ve won a seat on the authority after the polls close on 4th May.
In the latest in a series of ward profiles, we feature the election hopefuls in the Hammerwich with Wall ward.
Carolyn Gittings (Labour)
“I am proud to be carrying the flag for Labour in Hammerwich and Wall ward, as I have lived in the ward for 30 years.
“I know the issues that effect people and their quality of life here – traffic issues in particular with speeding cars cutting through our villages and drivers parking without any care and consideration for residents, lack of bus services and fly tipping.
“I have worked as chef/manager in the care sector and believe that those who are frail and elderly, deserve better than they are being offered at present.
“I am a keen walker and enjoy walking the wonderful open spaces we have here, that’s why I shall do my best to protect our green belt and promote our countryside to improve residents’ health and wellbeing.”
Leona Leung (Conservatives)
“One of the highlights living in the local area with my family are the beautiful walks, along with meeting our local friendly villagers.
“My background is in housing, community and tourism, hence I am passionate about improving the quality of living and buildings in the rural areas.
“I am keen on preserving its history and the beautiful surroundings. Also, it would be great to have local facilities that are easily accessible.”
Lorna McGinty (Labour)
“I worked in the education system for over 25 years, firstly as a teacher until a severe stroke left me disabled and unable to teach – then, as a specialist learning support assistant, until redundancy.
“I now work part time in the retail sector alongside the voluntary work I do with the NHS.
“I believe in a fair, caring, mutually supportive society and think it is our basic human duty to look after each other.
“That is why I am a member of the Labour Party. I wish to bring hope of a community that cares for everyone.”
Janice Silvester-Hall (Conservatives)
“Living in the ward, I am well placed to make sure I am able to meet with residents when issues arise.
“Since being elected in 2019, I have been committed to attending parish meetings and having effective communication. I have engaged proactively with many planning and development matters, ensuring residents concerns are clearly and concisely delivered.
“Serving the community where I live has been a constant for me and supporting community groups, especially at the Platinum Jubilee celebration was an absolute treat.”
