Matt Fryer, 20, won best second year work prize for his Ultrasinc creation on the product design engineering course at Liverpool John Moores University.

The former King Edward IV School pupil’s invention fires ultrasound through water, allowing a single bowl of water to be used to clean large amounts of pots and pans without detergent.

The enviornmentally-friendly creation was developed after being awarded a £250 grant to develop a prototype.

“At the moment the most efficient and sustainable way to clean dishes is with a dishwasher, but as people’s homes get smaller it can be difficult to fit one in a kitchen,” Matt said. “With the Ultrasinc, transducers at the bottom of the basin produce high frequency vibrations, causing microscopic bubbles to form, which implode on the surface of the dish or pot and breaks off the dirt.

“It means you only have to fill one basin with water to do a large number of dishes.”

Matt is now on a 12-month paid placement with The Walt Disney Company as part of his degree, where he is responsible for critiquing shoe and home products for the global giant, and giving his input on how they can be improved.

And the future also looks bright for Ultrasinc as Matt has been advised by several industrialists to develop the product further.
