NEW plans to tackling litter and environmental offences have been drawn up in Tamworth.
The borough council's cabinet has approved an updated Anti-social Behaviour (ASB) and Environmental Crime Enforcement Policy.
It will see the authority's approach to such offences brought in line with government guidance.
The updated policy removes "zero tolerance" wording and strengthens the use of officer discretion, allowing every case to be considered on its own circumstances.
It also introduces new commitments to be more open about how enforcement decisions are made and reported.
Cllr Dave Foster, portfolio holder for environmental sustainability, recycling, waste and transport, said:
"We all want to live in a clean, safe and welcoming borough – this updated policy makes sure we continue to take action against people who damage our environment, ensuring that every decision is fair, proportionate and based on the evidence.
"This is not about issuing fines to raise money. It's about protecting our neighbourhoods, supporting responsible behaviour and giving residents confidence that enforcement powers are being used fairly and consistently."
The council said it will not set targets for issuing Fixed Penalty Notices under the new policy.
During 2024/25, the council issued just one notice for littering, one for fly-tipping and one for a duty of care offence.
