UKRAINIAN Independence Day has been marked at a service in Lichfield.

Local residents and those who have settled in the area were joined by Cllr Richard Cox and a number of families that have opened their doors to those fleeing the war in their homeland.

As part of the service, the flag was raised by Volodomyr Savchuk and Yuliia Kravchenko, accompanied by Yurii Komozov playing the nation's anthem on alto saxophone.

A spokesperson said:

"Independence Day is especially symbolic to Ukrainians. Before the war, it was a public holiday and a day when families came together to share a special meal and reminisce."
