THE winners of an award in memory of a local fundraiser have been unveiled.
The Burntwood Town Council Student Award was set up in 2015 to celebrate the life and achievements of Stephen Sutton MBE. It offers talented young people help to develop their skills and further their achievements.
This year’s winners are cyclist Oliver Larner and swimmer Lucy Wolyniec. Both will receive £1,000 to support their sporting development.
Cllr Laura Ennis, chair of Burntwood Town Council said:
“It was wonderful to meet Ollie and Lucy who have been picked to receive this year’s Student Award.
“The award is in memory of Stephen Sutton MBE who sadly passed away in 2014. Burntwood Town Council decided to honour Stephen by offering this award to invest in young people in our town, to help them to achieve or aim for a goal that may have been harder without it.
“It is available each year – and every year we are blown away by the young people who apply.”
Cllr Di Evans, chair of the community and partnerships committee, added:
“Burntwood Town Council is proud to recognise and support the talents of young people of Burntwood.
“Lucy is an aspiring swimmer who is keen to help others develop their swimming skills as well as competing herself. Ollie is a very enthusiastic cyclist who has been cycling from an early age and he hopes to continue competing in this country and abroad.
“We wish them both every success in their chosen areas and hope the Student Award will help their ambitions.”
