Work has started to restore an historic drinking fountain in Lichfield

Lichfield District Council is using funding, secured from city developers through section 106 agreements, to clean and restore the Serjeantson Fountain on Greenhill in Lichfield.

Contractors, MSM Midland Stone Mason, dug out the fountain and pump stone on Wednesday 23 May, and took them away so they could receive the conservation treatment.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of June, with the fountain back in place in time for the Olympic Torch Relay on 30 June 2012.

When it is set back in place, passers-by may notice the fountain has changed in more than just its appearance. This is because, when it was excavated, the contractors discovered that it was buried at least 75cm underground, so it should be considerably taller.

Councillor Alan White, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Development Services, said: “It is important that we look after the district’s historic monuments. This is why we are investing money into restoring the fountain, which will help make this area more attractive and conserve a piece of history.”

As part of the project, the council is also landscaping the area with new flowerbeds and adding a bench.

It would be great to be able to drink some of our abundant water from the fountain.
At the moment its all being syphoned off at a bottling plant.

No, some of it is. Your water is still mostly from the same aquifer. Nothing special about Elmhurst Spring…
