Labour have confirmed that Sue Woodward will lead the party in Lichfield and Burntwood.

She takes on the role at Lichfield District Council after her husband Steve Norman – who was the opposition group’s previous leader – failed to win a seat in the Summerfield and All Saints ward.

Despite only having four councillors in the 47 seat chamber, Cllr Woodward believes Labour will bounce back from the disappointment of the local elections.

“Locally, we were obviously really disappointed with the result and particularly losing Steve, which was a personal low-point as well.

“But I’ve been overwhelmed with messages from people asking what they can do to help going forward – it’s now about capturing that enthusiasm of people who have been re-energised.”

The controlling Conservative group hold 41 of the seats at the council, but Cllr Woodward says her party won’t lick their wounds for too long.

She said: “We have to take it on the chin, accept it as a democratic mandate and move on from there.

“As a small opposition group previously, we’ve ploughed a lowly furrow and now we’re an even smaller opposition group. But there’s a huge amount of good will and support coming through from members and supporters.

“That’s really encouraging for Labour locally.”

Good news for the Lichfield District. Sue is brilliant, capable, and incredibly sharp. I’m certain she’ll make sure that decisions at the District are scrutinised, and held to account.
