The list of charities authorised to carry out street collections in Lichfield and Burntwood is set to be discussed.

Lichfield District Council’s Regulatory and Licensing Committee will debate the proposed list of organisations for 2014 at a meeting tomorrow (November 28).

The list will cover only those collecting cash rather than charities trying to get people to sign up for regular direct debit distributions.

A report from the council’s licensing and electoral services manager, Sarah Pearce said: “A list of charities that carry out street collections regularly is prepared annually and put before Members [of the council] for their approval.

“The charities whose collections have been approved can then apply for a street collection permit for the following year.

“One permit is issued per week (Monday to Friday) and one for each weekend for individual areas of the district. Permits are issued on a first come first served basis.”

Why do genuine organisations need this red tape while scruffy individuals just sit down and hold out their hand?

Having recently lost a local friend just 32 to Bowel Cancer I know how much Bowel Cancer UK need funds to help their Never too young campaign to ensure correct training for GPs and early diagnostic tools to be available as early diagnosis is key with Bowel Cancer. I for one would love to See Bowel Cancer UK collecting around Lichfield and surrounding areas.
