Councillors in Burntwood have criticised residents who took grit for their own personal use during the recent freezing weather.

With only main routes gritted during the cold snap, many locals used public bins to help keep side routes clear.

But in a motion due to be delivered by the opposition Labour group at a meeting of Burntwood Town Council this week, some residents have been accused of misusing the grit stocks.

“We commend those local residents who have worked so hard over the recent period of severe weather to grit local roads on behalf of their neighbours from grit bins,” the Labour motion said.

“But we are also disappointed that some residents have been observed taking grit from bins for their personal use rather than for public benefit.”

The motion has urged the local authority’s Conservative leadership to enter into discussions with Staffordshire County Council in a bid to devolve the responsibility – and funding – so that Burntwood Town Council could look after the stocking of local grit bins.

The Labour group is also hoping to see a Burntwood Ice Busters scheme set up to support community volunteers who are keen to keep local streets clear during cold weather.

The motion will be heard at the meeting on Thursday (March 15).
