But Philip John, who has represented the Something New party, believes that whoever the victor is they need to hear what voters have to say on key local issues.

Before yesterday’s vote, Mr John had sent out postcards asking what residents thought on key issues. After receiving a number back he believes communication will be crucial from their new councillor.

“It’s been fantastic to see people take the opportunity to think about and communicate their priorities – something they are rarely offered,” he said.

“Regardless of the result I’d love to keep getting completed postcards, and if anyone didn’t receive one I’ve created an online tool for anyone in Lichfield to add – and vote on – their priorities.”
