COUNCIL chiefs say local high streets will get a boost thanks to new powers to sell off leases for shops that have sat empty for a long period of time.
The High Street Rental Auctions legislation gives local authorities the ability to force landlords to rent out premises to new tenants, such as local businesses or community groups.
Eligible properties must have been vacant for 12 months continuously or for at least 366 days in a 24-month period.
Figures reveal that across the country one in seven shops sit empty – but Lichfield District Council hopes that the new powers will allow it to work with retail property owners to breathe new life into buildings in shopping areas.
Cllr Richard Holland, cabinet member for the high street and economic development, said:
“Unfortunately, I expect we will see an increase in the number of vacant retail premises in the district over the next six to 12 months as a result of the increase in employers’ National Insurance and minimum wage, coupled with the slashing of business rate relief from 75% to 40%.
“Despite this we are determined to do everything we can to keep our district’s high streets as attractive and vibrant as possible.
“We will be working proactively with landlords on this to ensure that key properties do not remain empty and can be put back to use for our residents, businesses and visitors.”
In order to implement the new legislation, the council needs to consult on the suitability of designated areas where they could be used. It is running a survey on the issue which can be filled in online by 10th February.
