Burntwood Town Council has confirmed it is hoping to reduce the bill for the 2017 Burntwood Wakes after concerns were raised over some elements of the event.
A report to a meeting of the authority’s events committee next week has outlined a number of successes at the Wakes, although concerns have been raised about the security presence on site.
The organisers had hired three members of security staff for the day, but only two turned up.
The report added: “The security personnel [who were there] stated that they had only been asked to attend the event the night before, had no walkie talkies and had been given no information whatsoever.
“It was felt that the security personnel could not be ‘picked out in a crowd’ and [were] technically not fit for the role.”
A meeting of the Wakes Festival Committee has now agreed the invoice for security charges won’t be paid in full and that the council would seek to pay a reduced amount.
A number of displays and attractions were well received, according to the report including the dog obedience display and the games arena.
However, a balloon modeller did not turned up and only five members of a drum corps turned up rather than that 14 or 15 that had been expected.
The report added: “It was agreed that the invoice would not be paid and that a reduction would be sought.”
The Wakes review will be discussed at a meeting of Burntwood Town Council’s events committee at the Old Mining College Centre on July 17.
