LICHFIELD Hockey Club's men suffered a defeat on a tough opening day against a strong Telford and Wrekin side.
The city team's task was made tougher by limited squad availability, which meant they only had one sub available.
Beginning a new era with not only a new pitch but also having to play quarters at Eastern Avenue, the team had much to get used to.
Telford took the lead as they fired an easy drag-flick into the goal.
Lichfield were unlucky not to equalise, but sadly, with an open goal at his mercy, Dan Thomas was unable to convert.
The second quarter was goalless as the city men battled hard to go toe-to-toe with their opponents.
But the gallant defence was undone as a change of ends saw Telford and Wrekin end the quarter 4-0 up.
The final stage was a tough test, but Lichfield stood strong as Will Davies made a great save on the line.
Telford and Wrekin did find one more goal before the final whistle to wrap up a 5-0 defeat.
Lichfield travel to Loughborough University in a must-win game against their 3rds next – and they'll be hoping for better availability to give them a chance to get things started in what could be a tough season for the team.
