Conservative duo Cllr Mark Warfield will take on the role of first citizen with Cllr Bob Awty as his understudy.

They were confirmed in the roles at a meeting of Lichfield District Council.

Cllr Warfield said: “During the coming year I intend to do my very best to uphold the dignity of the role.”

It was also confirmed that the Talking Newspaper project would be the new chairman’s chosen charity for the year.

“They are a local organisation,” he said. “And blindness is something which can happen to anyone at any time.”

Outgoing chairman Cllr Salter warned his replacement that the year would pass by quickly.

“It has been an immense privilege to be chairman and it has exceeded all of my expectations,” Cllr Salter said. “There have been countless highlights.

“As someone who came from humble beginnings in a back to back house in Birmingham, I still have to pinch myself to think that I’ve had the opportunity to represent this district at everything from ribbon cutting events to meeting senior members of the royal family.

“Cllr Warfield will soon find out how quickly the year will pass.”
