A new book will explore the history of the church in the context of Lichfield and the historic kingdom of Mercia.
Drawn to the Light: A history of a Dark Time by Dr Robert Sharp brings together new thinking and archaeological discovery to explore how the early saints struggled to spread the Christian faith in the face of Roman suppression, pagan alternatives, scheming kings and Viking rampage.
A spokesperson said: “For those who love history, for teachers who have to explain local history and the visitor who simply wants to know more, the book provides some answers to help understand events which led to the eventual establishment of Christendom after a thousand years.
“The book should help answer such questions as why Lichfield became an important Christian settlement, how the Saxons built the early church and which kings and bishops, especially Chad, nurtured its growth.”
